Hard to sum up what everyone tells you is the happiest day of your life in a few sentences. I could write pages & pages but no one would read it all, so I'll just jot down some points.
It certainly was a great day, up there with the Eurovision for sure. I didn't ball my eyes out in the ceremony or the speeches and considering I've cried at the weddings of people I don't even know, this was an achievement! I was also quite relieved to fit* into the dress, it's not like I'd been starving myself before hand, in fact, quite the opposite. (See previous post)
2 days before the wedding I had a nightmare that the jazz band hadn't showed up and that no one told me and when I was walking down the aisle somebody thought it would be a good idea to play the Proclaimer's 500 Miles instead. (One of my most hated songs of all time)
Anyways, so when I was speaking to the registrar 5 mins before the wedding and she told me that the band hadn't showed up my first thought was 'shit, I hope they don't play the proclaimers." At this point Roger the DJ steps up to the plate and becomes our hero. The band had rang him, he had rushed home & downloaded the songs we wanted for the ceremony & then came back to the venue early to play them. Roger the DJ was the Bizz- and as if that wasn't enough, he then proceeded to play all of my most favourite songs in the world later on the dance floor. Including the Nolan's I'm in the Mood for dancing. Which everyone certainly was. I tried to keep up with Andy's aerobics during 'Lola's Theme Tune' but it was hard in that bloody dress I tell you.
Kieran's "How Well do you Know the Bride & Groom" quiz went down well. My family obviously don't know us at all because two tables scored nul points!! As suspected, the table with Mezza, Ange, Andrea, Arnie won. They had a good representation from down the years.
I wasn't really nervous before the ceremony until I spoke to the registrar & then during the ceremony I nearly got a fit of the giggles (later people said they thought I was about to cry- there's a fine line between the two emotions at that point!). Then the registrar reminded us of how solemn the vows were that we were about to make- which made things worse. But I didn't laugh out loud, thank goodness.
I was more nervous later before the speeches & the first dance. I could never understand why brides let the men do all the talking. Naturally, it would be unnatural for me not to talk, so I gave a speech first, to get it out of the way. And I don't know who was more surprised when Dazza ran up & snogged Kieran's best man, Scott, during the best man speech. My family? Scott? Scott's wife?
We got through our 'swing dance' to Bobby Darin's "More", although, for obvious reasons, we hadn't practised with me in that big dress before, and it was difficult to do a swing out with that train thing hanging off the dress, but we gave it our best shot.
Throwing the bouquet was fun too- I turned around just in time to see Dazza, Andy and Garry in a fight over it. I mean, what hope did the ladies have with those three???!!
Another highlight was Kieran & I sitting up in our hotel room, drinking cups of tea & opening all the presents & cards that people had brought us. I was overwhelmed, yet again, by people's generosity. It's not cheap to come for a weekend to that part of the country & we weren't really expecting people to buy us gifts/give us money as well. We now realise that it's the Irish custom to give money in cards- amazing. We should get married more often!!
A great day. Naturally went too fast, but I knew it would.
* couldn't really eat or sit down in it though...
