The Far Side

Goodness it's been a long time since I last blogged. And things have been jogging along nicely. Nothing and lots has been happening.

  • K got a job. Working with Energy and doing something similar to what he was up to in London (AKA, I still have no idea what he does).
  • I've been enjoying my job and am now up to 5 days a week split between the two campuses (campusi?) of Clayton and Caulfield
  • We've had many a first here- first beach day, Australia day, beer at the Espy, trip to the wine country of Beechworth, first birthdays in Oz (well, not technically the first but first together) first trip interstate (Brisvegas) and all the while having a jolly ole time.

I've been re-appreciating things that I'd forgotten about living in Australia too. Everyone should go overseas to re-appreciate them! things like;

  • the smell around you when it rains
  • the fact that you can see stars in the sky
  • beautiful weather (and yes, Melbourne, I mean you)
  • space all around you
  • great local wine
  • native flora- is it just me or are the colours amazing at the moment-purples and reds-magnificent

On the negative side it's kind of an in-limbo situation friend wise. You go overseas, spend 8 years there forming close friendships. But when you come back you feel a bit like you've lost both your friends from overseas and also your friends here because everyone has (naturally) gone on with their lives and you're not really as close as you used to be. I noticed this particularly the night of my birthday, which I spent with family and a few dear friends (you know who you are) but many people couldn't make it and many never even responded to the invite! I really miss being sure of who your friends are. And I miss not being able to ring a good girlfriend and say let's go out for a drink tonight and catch up. It seems to be so much more effort here too as everyone lives so far apart.

I guess it will just have to be up to me to put extra effort in. After all, I was the one who left for 8 years!
