The Abbaesque life defining moment

We've been invited to a murder mystery dinner party set in 1967. I get to play Mary-Jane Faithless, which is uncanny because my middle name is Mary. What are the chances??!

I'm really looking forward to it, especially as i get to dust off one of my mostetest favouritist dresses ever to attend. Let me tell you a story about how I got this dress.

Once upon a time, I was visiting my friend Sumo (not real name-we lived together in Japan. She calls me Ebi, which means shrimp, I call her Sumo, which means Sumo) in Calgary and she remembered how much I'd loved 'daggy' music and had bought us tickets to see an Abba tribute band. Excellent friend. I'm pretty certain it was the aussies Bjorn Again

So, in my excitement I explain to Sumo, that in Australia when you go to see a tribute band like BA it's customary to get dressed up. She thinks this is a fabulous idea, and always one for a laugh, takes us to this amazing retro op-shop place, the likes of which I've never seen before or since, where we purchase righteous groovy costumes for the evening. See above

Sumo and I arrive at (a university hall type place) dressed in full 70s gear only to find we are the ONLY ones (apart from the band) that have done so.

Now, when these things happen you can do one of 3 things:
1. go home, mortified
2. cringe in a corner and hope no one notices
3. make the most of it & flaunt yourself

Which ofcourse, is what we did. I remember queing up for the loos with ladies all around us exclaiming 'what a great idea, i wish we'd thought of that'. We even started the dancing at the front of the stage, and later in the evening, when things were in full swing, and at least 15 people were up dancing with us, we got called up on stage by Agnetha from BjornAgain/Abba who said, I quote, in an excellent Swedish accent; "you girls look great, why don't you come on stage with the band and dance with us."

Now, I've been on stage with bands before (usually hiding behind my keyboard and the red-headed brass section) but nothing beats getting called up on stage by a band member based purely on your looks. It was a life defining moment.

So, you can imagine, I'm well pleased to be able to get the dress out again. God knows what will happen this time. I think it has magical qualities.

I knew you would respond to this. Because:

a) I suspect you to be one of the only people to read this blog on a regular basis!!

b) You would have been right there in the moment- only you would have made your dress (out of curtains?) or had it in your wardrove already.

this may have been a cox/teen moment for me, but you have had many such moments I'm sure

I miss your shennagins- but maybe we can play next year when I'm home :)
