I'd like to claim my lack of blogging as a technical hitch- EBlogger's been out of action for the past few days- but of course this is not the case. I'm just a slacker, and Eurovision has really crept up on me this year. Probably something to do with the fact I'm so far away from Europe & I'm working full time again.
Excuses, excuses.
So, here's my take on the whole thing.
On a first hearing I really didn't think much of the songs. (With the exception of stylish Italy). To the point that I've been telling anyone who'll listen that the UK are in with a serious chance this year with Blue!! So, you can see my state of mind. Oh ye of little Eurovision faith. Now that we're down to the final 25 (AKA; the crap has been weeded out) it's shaping up to be a decent contest after all. I haven't had the time to do my usual following of the Shlagerblogs & watching of the 1st, 2nd dress rehearsal, semis, YouTube videos, looking at the photos and reading of the interviews etc etc, so I'm just coming in from a pure audio perspective this year. And here are some thoughts.
Italy-Madness of Love: I'm thrilled, as we all are surely, to see Italy back. And with such a classy number. I think they'll get a standing ovation on the night for re-participation, and maybe even a couple of votes to boot, but I don't think the song is Eurovisiony (yep, that's now an adjective) enough to win.
Ireland-Lipstick: "God, another embarrassment" I thought initially. When will there be an Irish song I can really get behind? On further listening I realise that it is insidious enough to get in the ear of the public & have every tele-voter under 11 rushing for their parent's mobile*, so maybe it has a chance? And when I say chance, I mean top ten. I still don't believe it's a winner.
Sweden- Popular- see above
UK- I can: Can they? It's a possibility. I'll have to see what the bookies are saying...It doesn't seem to matter what the UK throws into the mix lately, they can't quite get that number one slot.
Serbia-Caroban: I like this one. This could stand out enough from the same-same-but-differentness of this year and do well. Wonder what she looks like, is she under 22? That seems to be a factor these days.
Greece- Watch my dance: Listen to my rap**. No thanks. Look at my long legs. Okay, maybe.
Germany- Taken by a Stranger: Clearly Germany don't want to host it again for another year. Lena will get a big cheer for being cute-former-winner-Lena and being a German in Germany but not because the song is any good in any way.
France-Sognu: Another one to watch. It might do really well; it's an awesome piece of music after all, but then again, it may be completely misunderstood and come last. What does he look like & how young is he? Maybe, maybe. This wouldn't be out of place as the theme music for the whole night. haha
Hmm. I'll do some surfing and get back with more informed opinions later...
* or indeed, their own mobile in this day & age
** I actually mistyped crap there instead of rap!! A Freudian typo
