Me da says that when women reach middle age they either turn to God or the Garden. Well, I don't know about the middle age thing but now that we're mortgage owners I do love to garden. I had never been interested in this much before. In fact, many friends would cite the 'watering the plastic plant episode' as hard evidence of my lack of plant knowledge.
However, we now have a garden & I'm into it. I will qualify this with the statement that I'm into growing things you can eat. I don't do ornamentals. Unless they do themselves & we inherited them when we bought the house. Like the nice looking magnolia trees & the other winter blooming things in the front garden that I can't name.
But things you can eat. Now that I'm interested in. In the winter garden I've got beetroot, snow peas, broad beans, celery, chard, peppers (that are actually turning red, woohoo), spring onions, chillies, lemons galore, potato onions, leeks and a myriad of fancy herbs.
And tomatoes- that have self seeded. They must be pretty sturdy things because we've had miserable weather lately- including a bit of frost. But they are still poking their heads through the beetroot. I might let them be. I hear that those plants that self seed are the strongest of all. Survival of the fittest and all that.
