Night trains are the way forward. Quite literally.
You don't have to get up at ridiculous times in the morning to catch them.
There is still a thrill in catching a train and this is doubled when catching it at night.
You don't have to pay for a hotel
You set up your bunk, fall asleep* and before you know it you wake up in a new country. Hours of travel have passed while you slept.
Only problem is when you are abrubtly woken up by PASSPORTE KONTROL screaming "Police!" at you at 4 in the morning on one side of the border and you're all disoriented and feel like a fugitive. Then just when you fall back asleep you have the same thing in the new country.
Still, weighing the pros & cons I like the night trains.
And speaking of weight, the backpack is far too heavy. I have tried to off dump some things and K has kindly taken a couple of books etc off me but even still, 20kg, what was I thinking? Well, I suppose I was thinking that we're travelling for 3.5 months and I've had all this contact lens stuff so why not carry it?! Plus we're travelling through wintery and summery conditions so have had to pack thermals and bikinis (although I doubt if the we'll have the opportunity to wear them at the same time). But one never knows...
*assuming you have good travel companions in sharing the 6 berth cabin with you, which we did.

i remember that experience on that train 13 years ago. it was really intimidating!
they seem much more frightening at 4 in the moment when they scream you out of your sleep, thatæs for sure!
