Greece is the Word- part 1, Athens

Checking out the blossoms in the National Gardens near Parliament
View of the Roman Agora & a pretty part of Athens!

Relaxing in the gardens in the Ancient Agora- a strictly no posing part of town. Little old ladies with whistles chase after you if you don't show appropriate respect while photographing and make you delete your photo!

The obligatory Parthenon shot
Well, after an abominably early start (5ish) including a 3 hour stop over in Rome airport. (Not a lot to do there I can safely report) we arrived in Athens. Everyone always says how Athens is a bit disappointing compared to the rest of Greece but we didn't find this at all. We loved it.

Maybe it was because the hotel was in such a great location (just under the Akropolis), or because the city was 'quiet' by Athens standards due to it being Easter weekend, or because of the lovely smells of the spring blossoms. Whatever the reason we loved it.
There was a great buzz in the city being Easter weekend, loads of orthodox ceremonies, people carrying lights around at night, roast lamb on spits everywhere, and general festivities. We passed one restaurant at 12.30am Easter Sunday morning and the usual suspects out the front trying to entice us in to eat at their place. When we said we'd already eaten he replied with mock surprise "Why so early??!"
One bad thing though, my card got swallowed by the bank at an ATM (those things are fast, man) near the Plaka. All things considered, if this was the worst thing then the holiday looked good. (Lucky there is always Kieran to help out with cash :) )
